What exactly is a doula? What do we do?
Strength in Support
The word doula comes from the Ancient Greek, meaning "a woman who serves." While that is still generally the idea, there is much more that goes into the work of a doula. Doulas have been engrained into birth culture for centuries as mothers, grandmothers, sisters, and aunts who all supported a woman in labor. While those family members can still be supportive, they can also look to the doula for reassurance that what's happening during the birth process is normal.
Doulas offer information, physical and emotional support, and a general warm and knowledgeable presence in the birth space. A doula will ensure you and your partner have accurate information about your birthing options whether you're planning a home birth or hospital birth so that you can make informed decisions for yourself and baby. It is my greatest wish that you enter your birth space feeling confident, supported, and empowered.
